Time for the beach!! cambodiakris5

There are many bus options to get to Sihanoukville.

I ended up choosing a mini van for $7. For an extra couple of dollars I got a nice small air-con van that was a little quicker than a large bus. It was worth it. As usual, when we got off we were crowded by Tuk Tuk drivers. I joined up with a couple from Turkey and we negotiated $3 to get to Serendipity Beach Road. It took about 5 mins. When I got there I hired a scooter for $5/day, handed over my passport as security (haha, probably a bad move but it worked out ok for me) and drove off to find my accommodation I had pre booked on Agoda. I got lost once and had to stop and ask for directions from a roadside stall and also crashed my bike trying to get through a muddy road running next to the beach. The mudguard of the scooter broke off and then I couldn’t start it, until 2 guys on big dirt bikes came along (I think they were American) and helped me get it started again. And finally i made it to my accommodation..

Sihanoukville is divided into a few different beach areas. Depending on what you want out of your stay is where you should choose to stay. I wanted absolute peace and relaxation. This is the absolute furthest along the beach where you can get to, and was completely isolated.  Plus, I thought it would be fun to sleep in a boat looking cottage.

And the sunset was magnificent!!

And the most amazing part of my 3 day stay there was the Bioluminescent Plankton. At midnight, the water was so warm and the bungalow manager invited me for a swim. And wonder upon wonders, when you swam through the water and disturbed the plankton all the water glowed. It was so enchanting!! We had fun swimming and splashing for ages making the water light up. When I got out and rubbed my skin, it glowed. I had a few hitchhikers obviously. It was so hard to catch on camera but one of the most amazing magical experiences.

And all too soon, it was time to get back to Phnom Penh. I hooked and taped the mudguard of the scooter back on and held my breath when I took it back, hoping I wasn’t going to get charged some astronomical fee, especially as they had my passport. They looked it over and just gave my passport back. Phew… release breath… And back on a bus back to PP.
